Former deputy found guilty of Massey's murder
Sean Grayson, a former sheriff's deputy in Illinois, US, has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Sonya Massey. The verdict was reached by the jury after a trial lasting just over a week, with deliberations beginning Tuesday morning and concluding Wednesday afternoon.
Grayson was arrested in July 2024 after Massey called 911 to report a possible prowler. Disturbing body cam footage released after the incident showed the moment the situation escalated.
The video captured (https://www.tmz.com/watch/2024-07-22-072224-police-shoot-woman-water-1870415-355/) Grayson telling Massey to drop a pot of boiling water before he shot her, claiming he feared she intended to throw the water at him.
Following the incident, the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office terminated Grayson. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Massey's family, expressed skepticism about Grayson’s claims after the footage was made public. The family has since secured a $10 million civil settlement related to Massey's death.
