Nigeria court commands TikTok influencers to wed following kissing videos
A court in Kano, northern Nigeria, operating under sharia law, has ordered two TikTok influencers to marry after posting kissing videos deemed "indecent" by local officials.
The Hisbah, Kano’s sharia police, has been instructed to arrange the marriage within 60 days, emphasizing the couple's feelings for each other.
Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, the influencers involved, faced backlash from some locals. Mai Wushirya has been arrested and is currently in custody, while Yar Guda has gone into hiding.
Hisbah officials confirmed they are working on wedding plans, with director-general Abba Sufi stating, “We want to do it as soon as possible.”
The Hisbah has also contacted Mai Wushirya's parents, who consented to the marriage, and efforts are ongoing to reach Yar Guda’s family.
Additionally, the Kano state government plans to buy a house for the couple, fulfilling the bride's request to avoid living in a rented home. Kano's enforcement of sharia law reflects the region's conservative values.
