Protests ignite in Tanzania amid controversial general elections

Protests erupted in Tanzania on the first day of the General Elections as young people took to the streets, blocking roads and confronting police in Dar es Salaam. Tensions escalated quickly when some demonstrators began throwing stones, prompting police to respond with teargas.

Video footage circulating online captured the chaos, showing protesters taking over a major highway, which intensified confrontations with law enforcement. Earlier, the government had issued warnings against protests and deployed tanks to deter unrest.

As the elections unfolded, voter turnout was reported to be low, with key challengers to President Samia Suluhu either jailed or barred from running.

Internet monitor NetBlocks noted a nationwide disruption to internet connectivity in Tanzania, raising concerns about information access during the elections.

President Suluhu, who succeeded John Magufuli in 2021, initially garnered praise for lifting political restrictions. However, she has faced increasing criticism for reverting to repressive tactics.

Opposition leader Tundu Lissu was arrested and disqualified, along with ACT-Wazalendo leader Luhaga Mpina, further limiting the electoral competition.

With youth comprising the majority of Tanzania's 37.7 million registered voters, frustration is mounting over the government's inaction on critical issues, including abductions.

As the situation develops, election results are expected within three days.
