Brazil's police operation results in 132 deaths

A state police operation targeting the Comando Vermelho drug gang in Brazil has resulted in 132 deaths, marking the deadliest raid in the country’s history. Initially, authorities reported fewer casualties; however, as the operation unfolded, the grim reality emerged, revealing a tragic truth that hit like a ton of bricks.

Executed on Tuesday, the plan aimed to drive suspects into a forested hillside for an ambush. In the aftermath of the raid, protests erupted against police violence.

Residents gathered outside government headquarters, shouting “assassins!” Meanwhile, family members displayed bodies in the streets, turning grief into a powerful symbol of outrage.

In response to the growing unrest, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed shock at the death toll, noting he was unaware of the operation beforehand.

Notably, the raid targeted one of Brazil’s oldest criminal organizations in the Penha and Alemao complexes, with police arriving in armored vehicles during the early morning hours.

As a result of this tragedy, calls for accountability and reform in police practices have intensified, as the community demands justice in the wake of such devastating loss.
