Influential R&B Singer D’Angelo Dies at 51 Following Battle with Cancer
The American singer D’Angelo, known for pioneering the neo-soul genre and self-taught pianist since the age of three, has passed away at 51 after privately battling pancreatic cancer, as confirmed by his family on October 14, 2025.
Born Michael Eugene Archer, D’Angelo gained fame with his debut album Brown Sugar in 1995, featuring the hit single "Lady." His 2000 follow-up, Voodoo, cemented his legacy, while his third album, Black Messiah, was released in 2014.
Throughout his career, D’Angelo won four Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album for Voodoo and Black Messiah. He became an international sex symbol following the iconic music video for "Untitled (How Does It Feel)."
Raised in Richmond, Virginia, he began playing piano at age three and signed with EMI at 19. D’Angelo struggled with fame and often took breaks from the music scene.
